Match Report

Golders Green entertained Wood Green Town in the return Herts & Middlesex League game at Claremont Road on Saturday, and gained a comfortable 6-2 victory. Had the home forwards utilised some of the simple chances that came their way, the score would have reached double figures.

With Hart unable to leave business, Golders Green played J. Wreford in goal, and this player made an excellent debut. He was safe, fielded cleanly, and kicked well.

Ebert, the young Hackney schoolboy, partnered Fisher at back, and showed distinct promise, though at times he took risks due, perhaps, to immature judgment.

The half-back line was good, Lovell in the centre being particularly strong. Breagan was inclined to mar his hard and efficient work by holding the ball too long, while Bucci's sound tackling and experience were of immense value. In his enthusiasm to be "in the thick of it," however, he is at times inclined to overwork himself. The forward line was good and lively, but there still seemed to be a lack of confidence in shooting.

It was soon evident that Golders Green were the better combination. Early on, a centre from Stroud beat Phillips, and Cochrane gained possession and scored with a fine shot.

Almost at once, the home side attacked again, and a good movement between Stroud, Shorland and Cochrane ended with the latter putting a good effort just outside.

Within a few minutes, however, Pulling gained possession, and put Stroud away. From the winger's centre Cochrane headed a good goal.

Wood Green began to settle down and launched some promising attacks, but were not rewarded until half an hour had passed. Then, as Wreford was saving a ball coming from the right wing, Breagan fouled Webber, and from the penalty kick Ford scored. Golders Green soon restored the balance, an excellent forward movement on the left between Shorland and Cochrane gave Pulling the ball, well placed, and he scored to bring the tally [to] 3-1.

There was no further score before half-time, though Fontana had a fine chance, but Mellis was too quick for him. After the interval, however, bucci and Pulling put Stroud away; he beat Farrer, cut in and scored an excellent goal. The manoeuvre was repeated immediately, but this time Stroud put outside.

Wreford made a good clearance with two forwards on him, before Golders Green attacked again, and the ball seemed to land and stop dead on the goal-line. The home side were, however, soon able to claim a further success, when Stroud took a fine corner kick, from which Pulling netted, to bring the tally [to] 5-1.

From time to time Wood Green made dangerous raids, and on one occasion Wreford made a brilliant save from Webber. Back at the other end, Pulling hit the post and the defence managed to clear a good centre from Stroud. Breagan gained possession, beat his man, and then beat a second, but in the meantime his first victim recovered and got away down the field. Lovell, hard pressed, tried to put back to Wreford, but the goalie could not reach the ball which trickled into the net. 5-2.

The home side seemed determined to restore the balance again. Pulling missed the ball altogether as Mellis advanced : Mellis saved well from Shorland, who tried another shot, just over the top. Finally, however, some good work by Stroud and a good centre enabled Pulling to dash in and net the sixth.
