Match Report

Golders Green visited Wealdstone on May 5 for the semi-final tie of the Middlesex County Red Cross Cup, and after being twice in arrears, won a thrilling encounter by a penalty goal scored half a minute from the end. They thus entered their third cup final of the season - a record for the Club.

The game opened at a cracking pace, and in spite of kicking up the slope, Golders Green had most of the play for a period. Then Wealdstone attacked; Poxon hit the post and a free kick taken by Upton hit the cross-bar. The visitors came back, and Hewlett did well to push out a header from Robshaw and tip a corner kick from Stroud over the bar.

Half-time came without any score, but nine minutes after resuming, Bossoms missed a ball; Garrigan beat Halton, who went across, and slipped the ball in for Dyke to open Wealdstone's account. Four minutes later, the Green were on terms, Robshaw putting Griffiths through to score from close in. Within a minute the Green nearly netted again; Upton miskicked, but Hewlett saved brilliantly from Griffiths.

Baynham moved to centre forward, and ten minutes later, Wealdstone took the lead again; Baynham put Garrigan in possession and Mortimore netted from his cross pass. After 41 minutes the Green again equalised. Stroud took a corner on the right, and Cochrane ran in to meet the ball, heading home. Again the Green attacked, but Robshaw skied a centre from Cochrane.

Finally, with barely a minute to go, Griffiths was brought down unfairly by Edmonds in the penalty area. Halton took the resulting spot kick and scored well with a cool shot, to win the game for the Green.

Golders Green thus qualified to meet Tufnell Park in the Final at the Empire Stadium, Wembley, on May 16.

On Whit Monday, Golders Green meet Tufnell Park. It will be Tufnell Park's home League game, but the proceeds of the gate will be devoted to the Manor House Hospital, and the winners will also be the winners of the Will Mather (Manor House Hospital) Cup.
