Match Report

Hendon won their third pre-season trophy in as many years on Saturday afternoon as they won 1-0 at Chesham United in the David Stanley Memorial Shield.

The game was played in memory of Mr Stanley, who was a former secretary at both Chesham and Hendon, who died during the summer, and a minute's silence was held before the start of the game.

The first half saw an evenly balanced game, with the best chances really coming Hendon's way, and indeed the Chesham keeper made an excellent double save from Glenn Garner midway through the half.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with chances at a premium for both sides, and neither keeper was really tested.

Sadly, the game was marred on the hour mark by a brawl involving most players, and after both managers had calmed their squads down, Chesham were reduced to ten men and Hendon were reduced to nine. All three players deserved their dismissals, and both sides were a fortunate that no other players were either cautioned or dismissed.

The winning goal came in the 73rd minute when some excellent work by Eddie Munnelly saw him end his run with a ball into the feet of Lubomir Guentchev, who beat his marker and slotted the ball under the keeper with a fine finish.

Despite their man advantage, Chesham were unable to create much in the way of chances, and James Reading was able to keep a clean sheet without being unduly tested.
