Match Report

Peter Slade, playing in the experimental role of outside left, put us on the road to victory against Wealdstone in the London Senior Cup first round replay.

He put us ahead after 14 minutes when he converted a pass from David Hyde and had a hand in the second, chipped home by Laurie Churchill three minutes later. A snorter from Gerry O'Rourke, which was too hot for Roger Durdle to hold, confirmed our first half superiority.

Wealdstone, who were forced to make several changes because of injury, came back strongly in the second half through England men, Hugh Lindsay, playing out of position on the right wing, and skipper Charlie Townsend, at inside right, who converted a penalty following a handling infringement by Roy Sleap.

The game was marred by a first half incident involving Wealdstone's Olympic man Hugh Lindsay and Roy Walker, which might have interested a boxing promoter.

The amazing thing is that apparently neither the referee or the linesman he consulted saw the most distasteful scene, which was certainly not in the best interest of amateur football. But I am sure that most of the 1,600 spectators did.

Unfortunately, Lindsay was booed for some time afterwards whenever he went near the ball. This is also not in the best interest of amateur football.
