Match Report

Wembley here we come! This was the general feeling of the 600 odd supporters who made the long journey to Whitley Bay, after the game last Saturday. The boys were magnificent, they played cool, thoughtful football and repelled all the efforts by Whitley to rush them off their game.

The game started with Whitley Bay straight into the attack and for the first twenty minutes they looked as if they were trying to stomp us into the turf. Their big centre forward, W. Wright, was charging about trying to upset Geoff Riddy and then John Swannell but our defence played very cool and let him get on with it.

We had one or two good chances in the first half but Jimmy Quail and then David Hyde put them wide. In the 40th minute a centre from Danny Lakey on the left wing was pushed away by the 'keeper; David Hyde accelerated, pulled it back, turned and shot into the corner. This was just the tonic needed and just before half time.

The second half saw us have much more of the game with the lads putting on the pressure. The second goal came in the 53rd minute. Roy Drake took a corner on the right and David Hyde, left unmared in front of the goal, headed in.

Seven minutes later Peter Slade put us in a wonderful position. He chased a long kick down the middle, just managed to beat the 'keeper for it at the edge of the area, he headed sideways, followed, and hit it into the empty net.

Five minutes from the end Whitley Bay reduced the arrears with a goal from 35 yards by right half Walton.
