Match Report

Hendon came away from Chelmsford City this afternoon disappointed that they hadn't taken a point from the game. The final score at Melbourne Park was 1-0 to the Clarets. It was also the first time in eleven games in all competitions that Hendon had failed to find the back of the net.

The Greens made three changes from the side that won at East Thurrock United. Craig Vargas returned to the side after a spell at Windsor & Eton to replace Jazz Rose, new loan signing Chris Robinson from Staines Town replaced the suspended Wayne O'Sullivan whilst Davis Haule returned from suspension to replace Rakatahr Hudson. Hudson and Rose took places on the bench with Ross Pickett, James Burgess and Danny Edwards.

The opening twenty minutes saw the home side take control of the game and their first good chance came in the 8th minute when Jeff Minton fired wide of the goal. Shortly afterwards Ricky Holmes failed to get on the end of a cross and the ball ran out of play for goalkick.

Hendon's first chance came in the 17th minute when Davis Haule saw a gap in the defence but his shot flew wide of the goal. Twelve minutes later Brian Haule didn't quite get enough of his head on a Jamie Busby freekick and Ashley Harrison was able to make a comfortable save.

Both sides had further half chances to take a goal but were unable to find the target so the teams went in for the break with the scoreline goalless.

The first opportunity in the second half fell to Chelmsford's young striker Jason Hallett but he missed from close range but in the 59th minute he made no mistake when he slammed home a rebound to give the Clarets the lead after Richard Wilmot had made a good save low down near his right hand post.

Hallett had another chance to score in the 70th minute but fired wide when it appeared that it was easier to score.

A minute later Jamie Busby was fouled by Fiston Manuella around 35 yards from goal. Manuella then fell to the ground holding his face suggesting that he had been elbowed by Busby. Unfortunately for Manuella, the referee had an excellent view and simply told him to get up and gave Hendon permission to take a quick free kick.

Lee O'Leary spotted Belal Aiteouakrim in a position to run into space and fired the ball forwards, Aiteouakrim ran on to the ball with the Chelmsford defence static, beat Harrison, but hesitated as he seemed to expect the referee to call the play back. As everyone screamed at him shoot, he somehow screwed his shot wide and Jay Conroy was able to recover and clear the ball to safety.

Hendon had a couple of further chances to score an equaliser but were unable to test Harrison, whilst at the other end Chelmsford also had chances but equally failed to test Wilmot and so the three points went to Chelmsford, thus ending their run of four defeats in a row.

Speaking shortly after the game manager Gary McCann said "I felt we deserved a point this afternoon. I'm very happy with the performance but at times our final ball was just lacking a little bit of quality."
