Tuesday 27 February - Update on Step 3 & 4 restructuring

The FA's Leagues Committee have been working hard over the past few months to decide the principles to be applied when allocating clubs at Steps 3 & 4 for season 2018/19, and made their final decisions at their meeting on 6th February. They have, this morning, released the details of their principles to the clubs and leagues likely to be involed. For the avoidance of doubt, we currently play at Step 3.

There will be an additional division at Step 3 next season, and the four divisions will consist of a North Division, a Central Division, which will consist of a band from the east coast to the west of Birmingham, a South West division and a South East division. The Southern League will administer the Central and South West divisions, the Isthmian League the South East division and the Northern Premier League the North Division.

There will also be an additional division at Step 4 next season taking the total to 7. The Northern Premier League will administer two Northern Divisions, and they are calling a meeting of its member clubs to decide whether to remain with a north/south split, or to change to an east/west allocation. The Southern League will administer the South Western and Midlands areas, whilst the Isthmian League will administer three divisions, best described as East Anglia, London & South Central and South East.

Obviously the big question for Hendon supporters is which division we are likely to be in if we are at Step 3 next season. It appears, based on maps that the club have received from the FA, that we could be in either of the South West or South East divisions. The border between the two is anticipated to fall somewhere on the western side of London, and depending which clubs are promoted and relegated, will depend on where the border finally falls.

The full league allocations will be made as usual once all the promotion and relegation issues have been resolved, and in previous years has been released in the second or third week of May. The FA emphasise that this is for season 2018/19 and the make-up of clubs in future season may alter this approach.

Sunday 25 February - New initiative for girls football coming to SJP

A new initiative coming to SJP, SSE Wildcats, is designed to inspire girls aged between 5-11 to be involved in the sport. SSE Wildcats Girls' Football Clubs provide girls with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls.

The sessions take place on a weekly basis, either after school or at weekends and Silver Jubilee Park provides a safe environment where girls with no football experience can; have fun engaging with sport, develop fundamental skills, try a variety of sessions, learn new things and create foundations for a lifelong love of sport.

Alongside the football for girls activities, there will also be opportunities for the attending parents, carers and siblings to engage with sport in "Family Sessions", e.g. Soccercise/Walking football at the same time.

Saturday 24 February - All square at SJP this afternoon

The first team played out a 1-1 draw against Lowestoft Town on a sunny but very cold afternoon at SJP.

The visitors took the lead in the 9th minute through Jake Reed after the ball was given away in midfield, and although the Greens had chances in the opening half, they were unable to find the back of the net.

The Greens were in control for much of the second half, equalising through a fine Zak Joseph effort in the 63rd minute, but they were unable to fashion a winner.

The first team reached the final of the Middlesex Senior Cup this evening thanks to a 2-0 victory over a strong Barnet side.

The Bees fielded a number of players with first team experience, despite having played a league game last night, but the Greens were too good, taking the lead in the 9th minute through Harly Wise, and doubling the score in the 56th minute through Harold Joseph - both players scoring their first goals for the club.

The final, which will be against Staines Town, is currently pencilled in to be played on Saturday 12th May at a venue to be announced. As soon as the details of the final are confirmed we will let you know.

Saturday 17 February - Two individual moments secure win at Thurrock

A moment of individual magic from Ashley Nathaniel-George, and a penalty save from Tom Lovelock ensured the first team came away from Thurrock with a 1-0 victory.

The first half was best described as scrappy, with neither side really getting hold of the game. Unfortunately it did see Keagan Cole leave the field with an ankle injury just before half time - and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Nathaniel-George's moment of magic came in the 52nd minute when he went on a mazy run, holding off a number of challenges, before firing the ball past former Hendon keeper Ben McNamara. Midway through the half, the home side were awarded a penalty, but Jordan Clark's effort was well saved by Tom Lovelock, and the team held on to secure all three points.

Saturday 17 February - Casey makes 350th appearance

This afternoon saw Casey Maclaren make his 350th appearance when he came on as a substitute for the injured Keagan Cole just before half-time. Casey is the 17th player (based on existing records) to reach this appearance milestone and we hope that there are many more to come. Casey's milestone comes just three months after Dave Diedhiou reached the same mark and the race is now on to see who reaches 400 first!

Friday 16 February - Supporters Trust awarded grant

Hendon FC Supporters Trust are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a grant by Wembley National Stadium Trust. This will allow us to upgrade the alarm system, install a new PA around the stadium and to replace the players tunnel with one that will feature the Hendon name with work expected to start before the end of the season.

The grant has been made available thanks to the activities at Wembley Stadium and an agreement that part of its gross annual takings are paid to an independent charitable grant making trust, which we successfully applied to.

We were also successful with another grant application last summer which has allowed us to set up a 2 year Mental Health & Football Project between Mental Health Services in Brent and Hendon FC to support people who face challenges in their everyday lives.

The project has shown great results already in improving mental health and wellbeing and some users have been able to start work, return to university with others completing their Level 1 in Certificate in Coaching Football.

Sessions take place on Thursday afternoons and the numbers attending has grown as word of the success of the project grows thanks to the great work of the session support workers and coaches.

Tuesday 13 February - Greens move back into play-off zone

The first team moved back into the play-off zone this evening following their 2-1 win against Leiston at SJP.

The Greens took the lead in the 3rd minute when Josh Walker took advantage of a poor clearance by Marcus Garnham to slot the ball into the net, but in the 19th minute an error in midfield led to Joe Marsden scoring an equaliser.

The second half saw the Greens in their most dominant form in a league game for a few weeks with the whole team contributing to an excellent 45 minutes. They gained their due rewards in the 69th minute when Arthur Lee headed home a corner from Oliver Sprague.

Sunday 11 February - 364 days since last league goalless draw

Yesterday was the first time we've played out a goalless draw in the league for almost exactly a year. Our last league goalless draw took place at SJP on Saturday 11th February 2017 - 364 days before our draw yesterday.

The only other game that has ended goalless was our Middlesex Senior Cup semi-final against Wealdstone, also at SJP ten days later on 21st February 2017, which saw the Stones win the penalty shoot-out 3-1.

Saturday 10 February - Game ends goalless at wet SJP

On a very wet afternoon at SJP, the first team played out a goalless draw against Dorking Wanderers.

The first incident of note came in the opening minute when the Greens were initially awarded a penalty. However, after consulting with his assistant, the referee corrected his decision to be a free kick just outside the box. The resultant free kick didn't test the visiting keeper.

Midway through the first half another penalty was awarded, and Niko Muir stepped up but fired the ball over the bar. The half ended with the Greens on top but not creating clear chances.

The second half continued in similar vein, with the Greens having plenty of possession, whilst looking much more secure defensively following the return of Tom Lovelock. However, chances remained at a premium and it was no great surprise that the game ended without a goal.

Tuesday 06 February - Greens dumped out of London Senior Cup

The first team were dumped out of the London Senior Cup this evening as they were beaten 2-1 by Balham, who play two levels lower than the Greens.

It was a thoroughly deserved win for the South London side, who are rapidly progressing through the leagues, with 5 promotions in the last 6 years. And it was Balham who set the pace in the opening period, hitting the woodwork in the first couple of minutes. They were rewarded for their efforts in the 34th minute when Arsen Ujkaj found the back of the net.

Within five minutes of the restart, Ibz Olutunde doubled the lead, only to see Oliver Sprague pull a goal back in the 55th minute. Whilst the Greens had the bulk of second half possession, Balham continued to be well disciplined and defended superbly to keep chances to a minimum and ensure their progression to the semi-finals.

Sunday 04 February - Gary relieved and delighted with win

Gary McCann admitted his relief and delight with the three points after the win at Burgess Hill Town when speaking to our match reporter.

He said: "I'm more relieved with the win in terms of the impact it has on this group of players than the context of the season as a whole. When you lose games, it can have a damaging effect on young players and I think people forget just how young this squad is at times. I thought we were fully worth the 3 points this afternoon and could have won by more."

Niko Muir scored his fourth hat-trick of the season to help lead the first team to a 4-2 win at Burgess Hill Town this afternoon, taking his personal tally to 33 goals this season.

The Greens, who had two debutants in Nick Hamann and Harold Joseph, took the lead through Muir in the 11th minute, only for Jack Brivio to equalise in the 23rd minute. Muir then restored the lead shortly before half time.

He completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute before Brivio pulled a goal back five minutes later, and it was Josh Walker who secured the win with a last minute goal moments after the home side had a chance of their own to equalise.
